What is it like to be a case manager?
“Amazing!”
“It has been so liberating – I never dreamed I could enjoy work so much! It is stressful at times, you have to learn how to manage your time- especially as an associate case manager but it’s great being able to create really client centred packages of care and rehabilitation therapy, seeing clients thrive, make progress and be happy, is the best feeling. Having the excellent team at AJCM for support also means that although you work alone you feel part of a team and someone is always available for advice.”
“Brilliant, challenging, fast paced and fun.”
“Challenging but rewarding, no two days or weeks or months are the same!”
“It is a rollercoaster and no two days are the same.”
“Every day is different, I love the variety. It is very rewarding to be able to have a positive impact on the lives of my clients. I gain a lot of satisfaction from being able to develop the therapeutic relationship and really get to know my clients and their families.”
“It’s challenging, rewarding and varied – no two days are the same.”
“Being a case manager is a very fulfilling job, you get to meet many different clients and teams surrounding them. Some days you’re out on the road plenty and others you’re at home or in the office catching up on admin and report writing. If you plan your diary and set your working hours, you won’t find yourself working evenings or weekends. Being a case manager means you can utilise your knowledge and be creative in planning your client’s rehabilitation and care.”
What is your favourite part of the job?
“Being able to really make a difference.”
“Problem solving – I love it when I manage to find a solution that works for the client. I like that I have the freedom to think outside the box more than in the public sector to find those solutions, it’s much more bespoke and far less prescriptive.”
“That my work can be totally client focused.”
“Building and keeping up my managerial skills and the flexibility.”
“Working with high quality support workers and teams to achieve the best outcomes for the clients we support.”
“Visiting clients.”
“When by thinking outside of the box I manage to resolve that issue/problem/challenge and by doing so it makes my client’s daily life that little bit easier.”
“We are in a very fortunate position whereby we can often access the best quality rehabilitation and provisions for our clients and with this we see some amazing client progress and goals being reached!”
What did you do before becoming a case manager?
“Occupational Therapist.”
“I was a District Nurse in the public sector.”
“Personal learning co-ordinator (teaching).”
“Physiotherapist – still am.”
“Physio.”
“Occupational Therapist.”
“Clinical lead nurse for a nursing and care agency.”
“Before becoming a case manager, I was studying at the university of Liverpool and achieved a Bachelor of Science with honours in occupational therapy. I also spent time working at the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust and a secure hospital for patients with autism.”
Why would you recommend it as a career?
“Because it allows me to be diverse, dynamic, creative, give quality time to people, see real outcomes, flexible working: great when you have a young family!”
“It has enabled me to fulfil the objective of why I wanted to be a nurse, I always wanted to be able to provide this level of service, but it wasn’t possible in the public sector. I am in control of my workload more than before and have a far better work life – home life balance, which in turn makes me happier and more productive. Every day brings a different challenge and has so much more variety available in how those challenges are met, I really feel that I have the freedom to provide a truly bespoke service to our clients.”
“No two days or two cases are ever the same and the freedom to work on exactly what your clients need is amazing. We are not bound up by bureaucracy and organisational targets like other roles I have done and CMs are respected as a key role for clients.”
“Flexibility and work life balance.”
“This is a great career for dynamic and high energy people.”
“Very rewarding and every day is different.”
“If you like a challenge, are good at planning and can think outside the box then case management can be a very rewarding career move.”
“I would recommend being a case manager as a career, I plan to be a case manager for the duration of my career as it has plenty of progression and job satisfaction. If you work for a company which encourages a healthy caseload and provides support when needed (which AJCM does), it is a very rewarding position to be in. I am able to plan my work around my young family and I earn a really good salary.”
